PREVENTATIVE CARE

Neutering
When it comes to neutering an animal, we assess case by case and you will have a discussion with one of our vets as several factors can influence when we decide to neuter your pet.

-
Female dogs can be spayed ideally 3 months after a season as this is when the hormones are at their lowest if they are cycling normally
-
Large breed dogs can be neutered ideally after 18 months old for skeletal maturity if needed
-
Cat neutering is based weight and breed, they can reproduce from 4 months old onwards.

Worming
When to worm your pets can based on their individual risk to exposure depending on your animals lifestyle I.e. indoor cats are low risk for internal parasites as their exposure is minimal. Hunters and scavengers are high risk, as are raw fed pets. Working dogs also need worming more frequently due to their exposure to wildlife
Parasitology (worm count) can be carried out by faecal samples (poo) from several different stools to see if your pet has a worm burden. Monthly worming is recommended for hunters/scavengers, versus quarterly for lower risk pets.
Pregnant women and immunocompromised individuals must take precautions when handling faeces due to several risks associated with contaminated faeces such as toxoplasmosis and bacteria
You can find more information regarding Toxoplasmosis on the link below:

Flea & Tick Prevention
Owners need to perform regular checks for parasites on your pets body.
We use a variety of different flea and tick products to suit your pet’s needs, oral treatments provide less environmental contamination if faeces are picked up and disposed of in bins
